Now serving with Rev. Dr. Shelly Petz!

August 24, 2009

Dustin & ShellyAs many of you know, Shelly and I are both ordained clergy in the UMC.  In December I was appointed to Goodland and Shelly was placed on Family Leave.  However, we are very excited that the Goodland congregation and Bishop Jones took action to have us both appointed here.  Thus, as of July 1, 2009, we are both serving the Goodland community!  We appreciate the faith and vision of the congregation to hire both of us, and we look forward to what God will do in and through our ministries together!

Shelly and I will be co-pastors and will share in all aspects of our ministry.  We each have different sets of gifts and graces, and so we will seek to employ them to be most effective.  Actually each of our various gifts complement well the other’s and so it ought to be a joy to work together again on the same team.

New Page – More About Me

January 15, 2009

It is amazing that the most popular page/post of this blog is the one about me (232 views as of Jan 15, 2009).  I guess that is normal.  If I like a site/blog, I usually want to learn about the author…and am often left wishing there was more info.  So, this is my attempt at providing a little more story, background, and juicy details (OK, not really)!

Clergy Family:
Maybe the most unique part of my story is that I am a UM clergyperson, as is my wife, her sister, and the sister’s husband!  Yep.  All four of us (two sisters and their husbands) are UM clergy.  All four of us went to seminary at Saint Paul School of Theology and now serve in the state of Kansas.  Here is a pic from when Shelly was ordained, with all of us together in a row.

Pastoral Journey:

I have been very blessed with some really cool (and very diverse) pastoral placements since 2000.  I first served as the circuit riding pastor (not a horse but a Dodge Stratus) for three small-membership congregations south of the Kansas City Metro area – Parker, Beagle, and Fontana UMCs.  It was a really great first appointment.  The people really took as part of their ministry the raising up of new clergy leaders.  I was blessed!  I lived half of the week in Parker and the other half in Kansas City, MO.

When I graduated from seminary (with a Master of Divinity degree) I moved to Northeast Philadelphia.  It was culture shock no doubt, but a really cool adventure!  Over the course of the first two years I served as the pastor of two congregations in urban settings with changing neighborhoods (Tabernacle Memorial and Central/Rehoboth UMCs).  I served part-time while attending Princeton Theological Seminary seeking a Master of Theology degree in Biblical Interpretation: New Testament.  (I had thought I might be called to a ministry of teaching in a seminary.)

My third and final year in PA was one where I served and focused my ministry on one congregation – Bristol: Harriman UMC.  It was an opportunity to focus more on my local church ministry and the importance of its context and local community.  I also enjoyed my role within the Conference Committee on Finance and Administration.

In 2006 Shelly and I shared in being placed together in a larger membership church in Olathe, KS.  Yes, we came back to our home state.  We were both Associate Pastors (not main preaching pastors, but had other more specialized ministries).  I served as the pastoral of discipleship and evangelism for Grace UMC of Olathe.  Much of my ministry was that of adult education, helping people get connected, and reaching out with various ministries.

I hope to provide more information – or change it at times.  Let me know your thoughts!  Dustin

Grace to Goodland – 4 of 6

November 11, 2008

As I continue this back and forth engagement with my hopes and griefs, I turn today to name a grief of mine as we leave Olathe.  It is really tied to the blessing that Shelly and I have connected well with a group of younger united methodist clergy in the KC Metro area.  Across the denomination the number of younger clergy is very low, about 4.5% of all elders, yet in the KC Metro area there is a higher concentration of us.  Shelly and I have been able to share meals, travel to local clergy and church events, travel to the Holy Land, and really connect with our peers in ministry in this area.  Thus I am grieving that we will soon be further from them.

One of our friends offered a rebuttal that even though we will live across the state from each other, that doesn’t mean we cannot be connected.  Most of us subscribe to one another’s blogs.  Most of us are on Facebook and are friends with each other.  Technology today allows people to be connected in new ways, not possible before.  Plus we will still be able to reunite at annual meetings – either KS area professional seminar or annual conference!

Finally, this new opportunity will allow Shelly and I to connect with and support the more scattered younger clergy in Kansas West.  We may have further to travel, but there is great potential to be bound together for life and ministry!

Thanks to the many people who have supported, loved, challenged, and called us to greater depth in faith and greater heights in vision!

“Go West young man”

October 1, 2008

It was officially posted to the Kansas West Conference website this past Monday, September 29th, that I am receiving a new appointment.  As of December 1, 2008 I will be serving as the pastor of Goodland United Methodist Church of Goodland, KS.  Here is a google map of where it is located.  Shelly will be on family leave until July 1, at which time she will plan to receive a part-time appointment.

Shelly, Shaylin, and I will be selling our home in Olathe and moving west in late November.  We have been blessed in our time of ministry and leadership at Grace and will miss the people and connections we have nurtured.  Yet we are also excited about this new path on the journey of pastoral ministry.

Transitions are hard – holding the spectrum of emotions (which ebb and flow) of excitement, frustration, grief, possibility, and just plain stress.  May God’s mercy and peace be with all of us as we move into the newness of each day.  We appreciate your prayers in this transition.

There are three things that we are called to do:

  1. say good-bye and end well,
  2. say hello and begin well, and
  3. tend to self-care and groundedness with God along the way.

Reflection Questions
(for your comment): What suggestions do you have for us as we transition?  How might a pastoral change invite us to think of other changes and losses that we experience in life?  Who do you find that helps you get through change and transition?

Shaylin Grace is here!

June 21, 2008

Shelly and I are excited to announce the arrival of Shaylin Grace Petz.  She was born on Tuesday, the 17th of June, at 11:14pm.  She weighed 7 lbs 15.3 oz and was 20.5 inches long.  Everyone is healthy and doing well.

Many have asked about the origin of her name.  Shelly and I have always wanted Grace as a girl’s middle name, even before we were pastoring Grace United Methodist Church, however, it offers a cool connection, especially given that Grace’s 150th anniversary is this month.  The first name of my grandmother (mom’s mom) is also Grace (she goes by her middle name, so their won’t be much confusion).

Shaylin is an Irish name that means “admirable”, however what really attracted us to this name were the two separate parts of the name: “shay” means “hawk” and messenger, while “lynn” (lin) means lake.  Shelly and I met one another and were married at Camp Lakeside, and Shelly has found the hawk as an important figure of her journey of life.  Plus we were looking for “Sh” names for girls.  A final cool thing is that it begins with Shelly’s name and ends with mine!

We came home from the hospital (Olathe Medical Center) on Shelly’s birthday, the 19th of June.

We appreciate your prayers and care!

Thanks to Andrew Conard of Thoughts of Resurrection, who helped me develop this blog.  I look forward to being able to communicate and post on multiple topics of interest: church leadership, theology, Bible, ministry, clergy couples, the Kingdom of God, books, and my family.  Probably the fact that Shelly and I due with our first child in the middle of June, I will have multiple posts of this new addition!
